The Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale has always bothered me because of the negative portrayal of wolves.
I greatly admire wolves for many reasons:
First and foremost because man's best friend, our dog friends, are the direct descendants of the wolf.
There are no known or documented wolf attacks on humans in the western hemisphere. Wolves are extremely shy and wary of humans and in fact, it is extremely rare to even see a wolf in the wild.
Wolf society is complex. Wolves are extremely social creatures and live in families called packs. Members of the pack help raise and take care of the pups, who are the future of the pack and therefore the species.
Wolves are extremely adaptable and once were native to every continent on the planet. Wolves have disappeared from many places around the world because of human presence. Wolves have been the target of mass extermination around the world and especially here in the US.
Wolves are extremely intelligent and have a sense of hearing and smell 10 times more sensitive than domestic dogs.

It was an exciting day indeed when wolves were introduced back into Yellowstone National Park where they continue to thrive and bring the ecosystem there back into balance. Now if the farmers around Yellowstone will just leave them alone.
Yes, I have great admiration and respect for the wolf.
