Oil Painting by Edward Hopper (1922)
American artist Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1822. His birthplace and boyhood home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the Edward Hopper House Art Center, a non profit community cultural center featuring exhibits, workshops, lectures, performances and special events. Hopper's main theme's were American urban life and its inhabitants and seascapes.
Hopper has had an undeniable influence in American culture. His House by the Railroad is said to have influenced the house in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and the home in Days of Heaven. Hopper's most famous work Nighthawk, depicting customers sitting at the counter of an all night diner, was the inspiration for those posters we have all seen of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean sitting at the counter of a 1950's diner and have been recreated in the 1998 episode of That 70's Show, as well as countless album covers and movies.
Other Hopper paintings have also influenced many movies such as Blade Runner, Road to Perdition, The End of Violence and Deep Red. You can also animated clips of Hopper's work between movies on cable's Turner Classic Movies.
