Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Fairies

Vintage Fairies or Are They Elves?

When researching for this post I honestly didn't know the difference between an fairy, an elf or a gnome, I guess I just had never given it all that much thought. When I think of a fairy I think of Tinkerbell and when I think of a gnome I think of David the Gnome, the series on Nickelodeon that I used to watch with my son.  But boy did I learn that a lot of people have given it a whole lot of thought!  I'm not sure if these people actually believe in them or if its just something fun and different for them to think about.

I guess the folklore is that there are eight races of fairies:  elves, dwarfs, goblins, gnomes, pixies, sprites, gremlins, demons and then hybrids, all of which have magical powers.

Many people have actually reported that they have seen fairies flying in and out of the caverns near Mount Shasta in California!  Mount Shasta seems to be a focus of much mysticism and is associated with bigfoot, ufos and a lot of paranormal activity in general.

Whether you believe in fairies or gnomes here are some sweet images

Free Vintage Clip Art - The Corset Controversy

The Corset Controversy

Vintage Corset Trade Cards

European women began wearing corsets in the 1500's.  In the 1790's there was a break in this tradition that coincided with the French Revolution when the styles changed to Empire waistlines.  In the 1820's the styles changed again and the waist became the focal point of fashion and the corset resumed its dominant role in women's fashion.  Doctors and much of the media deplored the undergarment.

The Corset Controversy was a series of letters and articles that appeared in newspapers and magazines in the 19th century.  The controversy raged for decades.  Women wrote to varies media in the United States and Europe complaining about the requirement that they wear them.  Laura Ingalls Wilder even wrote about the issue in her book Little Town on the Prairie.

Fashions again changed in the early 1900's and that was the beginning of the end of the corset and the misery of women everywhere!

Here are a couple of corset trade cards

Free Vintage Clip Art - Angel Paper Doll

Vintage Angel Paper Doll

Paper Dolls have been around as long as there has been paper!  Wow, who knew?
In France, in the mid 1700's, paper dolls, the first paper dolls were made in Europe.  They began as amusement for adults in high society.  They were drawn or painted and were very much like today's paper dolls.  These rare French paper dolls can be found in museums today.

The largest producer of American paper dolls was McLoughlin Brothers, was founded in 1800 and was later sold to Milton Bradley in the 1920's.

A paper doll convention is held in the United States every year.  Vintage paper dolls are becoming more and more rare because of the paper aging process and are very collectible, with sets going for between $100 and $500.

I hope you enjoy this lovely vintage angel paper doll!

Free Vintage Clip Art - Gibson Girl Request Day

It's Request Day!  So I bring you a Gibson Girl

Interesting image of a Gibson Girl and cherub.

The Gibson girl was the pen and ink artwork of the illustrator Charles Dana Gibson in the late 1800's and the early 1900's.  These fictional women personified feminine beauty in the United States with her long, slim neck, exaggerated curves and the hair piled high on her head.  And she was a merchandising phenomenon.

Thank you for the request and keep them coming!

Enjoy!
