WPA Labor Poster by Vera Bock and Blog Giveaway

Happy Labor Day!

I have a Labor Day poster for you today from the Federal Works Progress Administration.  This silkscreen poster is by Russian born artist Vera Bock and shows a farmer and a laborer was created sometime in the mid to late 1930's.

Born in 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Vera immigrated from Russia to America with her Russian born mother and American father at the beginning of the Russian Revolution.  At the age of 17 Vera began illustrating children's books and many of them are now housed at the University of Minnesota.

The woodblock look dominates her silkscreen posters.  She was affiliated with the Federal Art Project as a member of the New York City poster division between 1936 and 1939 and created about 175 posters.
