Pears are one of my favorite fruits and their origins go back to prehistoric times. Pears are harvested in the autumn while still green. They ripen at room temperature and will ripen faster if placed next to bananas! Who knew?
With the exception of the Bartlett Pear (my favorite) there is little color change in the fruit as they ripen. And because pears ripen from the inside out the best way to tell if a pear if fully ripened and ready to eat is to "Check the neck". Place your thumb on the stem end of the pear and apply a little pressure. If there is "give" in the fruit its ready to eat. If not, check daily.
I have a lovely pear arbor for you today
