Vintage Reindeer

Reindeer are also known as caribou and are native to the arctic.  Both males and females grow antlers.

The reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh were first named in the 1823 story, A Visit From Saint Nicholas.  Rudolph was added in 1939 in
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

Several Norwegian municipalities depict the reindeer in their coats of arms.  The Canadian quarter bears a reindeer.  The caribou is the official animal of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Reindeer meat is sold in supermarkets in Scandinavia.  Ground up reindeer antlers are sold as an aphrodisiac in Asia.
