Vintage Birds

I have some lovely birds for you today

This first one is an Asian inspired peacock and it really reminds me of the American calligraphy birds.  This vintage design might have been used to decorate fabric, tiles, ceramics or metalwork.

This is a drawing of a Northern Oriole or Baltimore Oriole and it is the state bird of Maryland.  It was named after Lord Baltimore because its colors matched those of Lord Baltimore's coat of arms.

The two birds in the foreground are males with the female sitting in the back.  They migrate in flocks from the northeastern part of America to as far south as South America although some orioles do stay near feeders.  Their nests are tightly woven pouches located on the end of branches.  Their diet consists mainly of insect but they are often found at hummingbird feeders.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

Originally, natural items were used to adorn Christmas trees, i.e., fruit, popcorn and candies in different shapes.  In the early 1800's a German glass blower created some glass garlands for his tree that resembled the strings of popcorn that usually decorated his tree.  His idea quickly caught on with other German glass blowers and Christmas tree ornaments began to be mass produced.

Christmas in the year 1832 young Queen Victoria wrote about her beautiful Christmas tree decorated with lighted ornaments, glass figurines and the presents sitting under it.  Then in 1840 a local British newspaper published a photograph of Queen Victoria's Christmas tree with the glass ornaments from her husband, Prince Albert's, native Germany and Germany began exporting the beautiful glass ornaments throughout Europe.

It was during a trip to Germany in the 1880's that E.F. Woolworth discovered these glass ornaments and began importing them to the United States and made a fortune doing it.  By 1910 over 1000 Woolworth stores nationwide were selling these imported German glass ornaments.  By 2009 Christmas decorations were second only to gifts in seasonal sales.

Scarlett Tanager

Oh this bird is my favorite color!  I've never heard of this bird but its so beautiful.  This songbird is part of the cardinal family.  They live in wooded areas on the eastern coast of North America and migrate to South America.  They eat mainly insects and fruit and spend most of their time in treetops.

Is it a Crow or a Raven?

Crow or Raven?

Did you know that a raven and crow are different birds?

Here are some differences:

Ravens are larger than crows.  A raven is about the size of a hawk and a crow about the size of a pigeon.

A crow's tail is a more rounded, fan shape while a raven's tail is a more pointed, wedge shape.

A raven weighs about 4 times more than a crow.

Crows are about 17 inches long while a raven is usually between 24 and 27 inches long.

The wingspan of a crow is about 2.5 feet while a raven's is 3.5 to 4 feet.

The beaks of the two birds are also different:  a raven's beak is curved.

The sounds that the two birds make are also different:  the crow makes a caw sound while a raven makes a croaking sound.

So what bird is this:  crow or raven?

Free Vintage Clip Art - Burrowing Owl Illustrations

I remember the first time I heard of a burrowing owl and thought OK that's weird!

Burrowing owls are tiny and native to North and South America.  They stand slightly taller than a robin and roost and nest in burrows in the ground that are often dug by prairie dogs.  Unlike most owls they are active during the day.  And like many other owls they use their night vision to hunt mainly from dusk until dawn.

Burrowing owls have bright yellow eyes but lack the tufts of feathers from their ears and instead have prominent white eyebrows!  The females tend to be heavier.  While hunting for food they often wait on a perch, like a rock, and even run across the ground and chase their prey!  How funny!

The burrowing owls in Canada and the northern US usually migrate to Mexico and the southern US during the colder months.  They usually live to be nine years old and they are often hit by cars as they run across roads.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Eastern Bluebirds

Eastern bluebirds are often seen sitting on telephone lines or atop a birdhouse.  The males have the more brilliant royal blue on the backs of their heads and the red brown feathers on their chests while the females wing feathers are tinged with blue.

Eastern bluebirds are thrushes with a big rounded head and large eyes.  They use nesting boxes and old woodpecker holes.  They can often be seen dropping to the ground from their perch on telephone wires to grab an insect.

Free Vintage Clip Art - Vintage Mockingbird

Vintage Northern Mockingbird

The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, TexasThey eat mostly insects during the summer and switch to fruit in the fall and winter.  They love maple, sycamore and sweetgum trees.  You will find them perched high in a tree, telephone pole, street lights or on high buildings.

The Northern Mockingbird is known for imitating the sounds of other birds as well as the sounds of other animals and mechanical sounds.  They are also some of the most vocal of birds and often sing during the night and when the moon is full and they sing year round except for late summer when they are molting.

In a 2009 study people were placed around the nest of a mocking bird.  Then certain people were asked to touch the nest.  Later, the mockingbirds recognized those that touched the nest and attacked them, while ignoring the other people.  Amazing!
