Antique Iron Line Drawings

Early hand irons were heated by flame or on top of a wood stove.  The first electric iron was patented in 1882.  Electric steam irons came along in the 1950's.

Here are a couple of antique irons

Vintage Lawn and Garden Tools

Maybe some of you will have good enough weather to get outside this weekend and work in the yard.  Well, probably not those us here in the Pacific Northwest, but we can still hope.

Here are some sure signs of spring - a clay pot and a push lawn mower.

Vintage Curling Iron

I had no idea that curling irons dated back so far!  The first hair straightener with two flat irons was patented in 1909.   Actually, the use of a heated implement to curl hair can be traced back to the Babylonians.  Ancients drawings depict people with curled hair.  Metals were heated over an open flame which obviously made it very difficult to control or maintain the temperature of the implements.

In 1946, Jessie T. Pope, an African American woman from Detroit, invented a thermostatically controlled curling iron and patented it with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt.

This is undoubtedly the prettiest curling iron I've ever seen!

Antique Rocking Chair Horse and Doll

Today I have some vintage toys for you.

Demand for antique rocking horses and rocking chair horses is so great that chips to the mane and ears is essentially overlooked.  Other things to look for:

The mane and tail should be real horsehair

The paint should be original and even if showing signs of wear the original paint is preferred by collectors

The saddle, stirrups and harness should be original

Antique rocking horses and rocking chair horses usually only become available through auction houses and demand and fairly good price.

Victorian Chandelier and Sofa

Victorian Vignette

Interior design and decoration during the Victorian era was all about ornamentation.  A plain room was in poor taste during this period so every surface was filled.  The parlor was the most important room in the home and where guests were entertained.

The Victorian era had no particular furniture style of its own but rather borrowed from styles of other eras and modified them.  Wallpapers of elaborate floral motifs usually in primary colors adorned the walls and embossed papers were used on the ceilings.

Here is a lovely Victorian era sofa

Vintage Baskets

Who doesn't love baskets?  Beautiful and functional they sure are better on the eyes than an old box.  I thought you might enjoy some lovely baskets today.

I love to put together gift baskets, especially for the hard to shop for people on my list.  Pick a theme, choose an appropriate basket and then shop for bargains for your theme.  People who have everything really appreciate these thoughtful kinds of gifts and you can indulge them with items they probably wouldn't buy for themselves.  And then they have a wonderful basket they can use and they will think of you every time they look at it.

 I really love this basket

Delftware Tiles

I have always loved the look of Delftware pottery and tiles.  I find the simple scenes of a time gone by so enchanting.  Delftware pottery has a white glaze
usually containing metal oxides and includes plates, pottery and tiles and was made in and around Delft in the Netherlands.

Delftwork, also known as tin-glazed pottery was first made in Antwerp in 1512.  The main period of the tin-glazed work was made between 1640 and 1740.  By about 1700 many factories began using enamel colors and gilding that required a third firing.

Delftware ranged from simple household items to works of art and depicted simple scenes of windmills, fishing boats, hunting, landscapes and seascapes.  The delft potters also made an estimated 800 million tiles over a period of about 200 hundred years.  Many homes still have these tiles in them that were laid in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Here are some delft tiles
